The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has sent a letter to the banks asking for the bank account information of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the only Nobel laureate in Bangladesh. Banks have been instructed to send the information by Tuesday (January 25).
Last Thursday (January 20), BFIU sent a letter to each bank asking for information on all types of bank transactions in Dr. Yunus’ name, even credit card transactions. The letter said that if any bank has any transaction record of the former managing director (MD) of Grameen Bank, it should send it to BFIU by Tuesday.
It is learned that Bangladesh Bank and National Board of Revenue (NBR) had earlier collected the bank account information of Dr. Yunus and his family members in 2016.
Dr. Yunus, who has been the MD of Grameen Bank since its inception in 1983, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 jointly with Grameen Bank.
However, the government removed him from the post of MD in 2011 due to his retirement age. Yunus went to the high court challenging the government’s decision and lost.
