Bangladesh Bank has announced that new currency notes worth Tk 23,000 crore will be released on the upcoming Eid.
According to the Bangladesh Bank, last year, the number of new currency notes on Eid-ul-Fitr was Tk 14,000 crore. This time the number of new currency notes is being increased. New notes are printed all the time the year. However, as the demand for new notes is high before Eid, the amount of printing has to be increased.
This time the new currency includes 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 taka notes. However, the same amount of old notes will be removed from the market as before.
In this regard, the executive director of Bangladesh Bank Md. Sirajul Islam said the central bank supplies currency notes to the market throughout the year following the demand-supply policy. However, as the demand for cash increases before Eid, more new currency notes are released at this time.
The central bank said in a statement on Thursday that new currency notes would be issued through banks on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Customers will be able to collect new notes from April 20. The general public will be able to exchange new notes till April 28 (excluding weekly and public holidays).
According to the central bank, new notes will be exchanged among the public through counters at various offices of Bangladesh Bank from April 20. In addition, new notes up to Tk 10, Tk 20, Tk 50, and Tk 100 each will be exchanged from 32 branches of various commercial banks in Dhaka city in a special arrangement.
A person cannot accept new currency notes more than once. However, while withdrawing notes, one can accept any denomination of coins from the counter regardless of the amount if desired.
