The agitating students have cut off the power supply to the residence of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed.
They disconnected on Sunday (January 23) at around 7:45 pm. One of the spokespersons of the movement Sadia Afrin confirmed the matter.
The agitating student said, “Even after 100 hours of our fast, we have cut off the electricity supply to his residence as the vice-chancellor has not resigned.”
Earlier in the evening, the agitating students took the position in front of the main entrance of the Vice Chancellor’s residence. They are not allowing anyone to enter the Vice Chancellor’s residence except law enforcement and media personnel.
An agitating student named Nafiza Anjum said, “I am peacefully taking the position in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence. We will sit here and fast and everyone will go and meet him, we don’t want that. That is why this program has been announced.”
The students have been protesting since January 13 demanding the resignation of the provost committee of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. Later, the demand for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor also came to the fore in the movement.
Later on the afternoon of January 16, the students blocked the Vice-Chancellor at the IICT building of the university demanding three points. Later, when the police rescued the Vice-Chancellor, there was a clash with the students. At that time, the police dispersed the students by throwing sound grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets. Several students were injured. Police filed 300 people against the students for being unknown. On January 19, 23 students started a hunger strike in front of his residence demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor. Hundreds of students took out a torch procession on the campus around 12:30 pm on Thursday demanding the same. 16 students who fell ill on hunger strike are undergoing treatment at different hospitals. Besides, the rest are being given saline.
