The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Department of Chemistry & Physics is gearing up to host an exciting presentation by solar astronomer Samaiyah I. Farid, Ph.D. Dr. Farid, a project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research High Altitude Observatory in Boulder, Colo., will be shedding light on the upcoming total solar eclipse.
What's the Buzz?
Mark your calendars for March 7 at 2 p.m. as Dr. Farid takes the stage at the S.A. Haley Auditorium in the S.J. Parker 1890 Extension Complex at UAPB. She will be diving into the topic of "Chasing Darkness: Observing the Rare Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024."
Why Attend?
According to Dr. Miah M. Adel, UAPB professor of Physics, Astronomy, Water Resources, & Environmental Sciences, total solar eclipses offer a unique opportunity to witness the solar atmosphere directly from Earth. These events are few and far between, lasting only a few precious minutes. Luckily, North America is in for a treat with a total solar eclipse set to grace the skies on April 8, 2024.
During her presentation, Dr. Farid will explore what we can expect to see during the eclipse and the valuable insights we can gain from these observations. She will also delve into how students, faculty, and individuals outside academia can actively participate in solar physics research. Plus, she'll be demonstrating eclipse observing tools like sunspotters and eclipse glasses.
The Golden Opportunity
Dr. Adel emphasizes that such an eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. It's a prime chance for the UAPB community to satisfy their curiosity on the matter. Faculty members are encouraged to bring along students for this enlightening lecture, and staff members are also welcome to join. Dr. Farid's speech promises to be highly educational, and eclipse observing glasses will be up for grabs at the event.
The Scientist Behind the Scenes
Dr. Farid's research centers on unraveling the thermal and magnetic evolution of coronal eruptions using ground and space-based observations as well as 3D models. A powerhouse in her field, she earned her Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 2020 and holds bachelor and master's degrees from Alabama A&M University.
