The hearing of the appeal and death reference of the wife who was sentenced to death in the murder case of Amir Ibrahim Abu Khalil (55) of Tabligh Jamaat in Sylhet has ended.
After the hearing on Wednesday (January 12) High Court Justice Sahidul Karim and Justice Akhtaruzzaman’s bench has fixed January 30 for the verdict.
Deputy Attorney General Bashir Ahmed appeared for the state in the court. The defendant was a senior lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan and lawyer Titus Hillol Rema.
According to court sources, the decapitated body of Ibrahim Khalil was recovered from the bedroom of his house on May 18, 2015. He was the Amir of Tabligh in Uttarpara of Dhopadighi in Sylhet.
Police arrested his wife, Fatiha Mashkura, for questioning after the body was recovered. Mashkura then made a confessional statement in court. Later a case was filed at Kotwali police station.
On August 24 of the same year, the police filed a charge sheet against Fatiha. Following the trial, on June 6, 2016, Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge Akbar Hossain sentenced Mridha Fatiha Mashkura to death.
The death reference was then sent to the High Court for approval. Besides, the accused filed a jail appeal and a criminal appeal.
