A court in Kushtia’s Kumarkhali Upazila has sentenced two accused to life imprisonment and one to death for killing a young man named Shahidul Islam (21) by cutting his throat.
Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge at noon on Tuesday (January 18). Tajul Islam gave the verdict. The matter was confirmed by the court’s Public Prosecutor (PP) Anup Kumar Nandi.
The convict sentenced to death is Salam Mollah. He is the son of late Munsher Mollah of Kalikatla area of Kumarkhali upazila. The convicts are Saiful Islam, son of Amir Hamza of Shanpukuria area of Kumarkhali upazila and Rezaul Joardar Kalu son of Haruna Rashid Haru of Kalikatla area.
The accused were present in the court when the verdict was announced. They were later sent to the district jail under police guard.
According to court sources, Shahidul Islam went missing on the night of May 23, 2009. Later, on May 28, at around 6 am, the family members identified his decapitated body in a pond in the Kalitala area. Kumarkhali police later recovered his body. On the same day, Shahidul Islam’s father Munsher Ali filed a murder case accusing 5 people.
Following the investigation of the case, he submitted the investigation report against the accused to the court on June 16, 2011. He set January 18 as the date for the verdict. The court passed the verdict on Tuesday after witnesses testified in the case.
Meanwhile, Shahidul Islam’s father Munsher Ali expressed satisfaction over the verdict and told Asian Tribune that the accused brutally tortured and killed my son Shahidul Islam by cutting his throat. We are very happy with this verdict after 11 years. But we would have been happier if they had been hanged.
PP Anup Kumar Nandi said the court had sentenced two accused to life imprisonment and one to death for being found guilty in the murder case.
