An accused in a rape case at Gazipur’s Sreepur police station has been arrested by immigration police at Shahjalal International Airport while fleeing to Singapore. Immigration police later handed over the accused to Sreepur police. He was arrested on Tuesday (January 18th) morning.
Arrested Md Rabbi (24) is the son of Shamsul Haque of his own Maona village in the Gazipur union of Sreepur Upazila of Gazipur. The victim was a student at a local school.
According to the case sources, the girl, a resident of her own Maona village in Gazipur union of Sreepur Upazila of Gazipur, used to study from home as the school was closed during the Corona period. On the morning of November 26, 2020, her mother left the victim’s teenager and young son at home and went to her husband who was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. Three days later, on the night of November 30, when she went out to respond to the call of nature, her neighbor, who had been lying in wait, raped her. When she told anyone about the incident, the rabbi left with death threats. Even then she informed his relatives about the incident. But a few local influential people did not take legal action against the rabbi and pushed for a settlement. After being killed, the girl’s mother filed a case against the rabbi at Sreepur police station on January 27, 2021.
Sreepur police sub-inspector (SI) Kamrul Hasan said the accused rabbi covered his body after the case was filed. He could not be arrested even after conducting raids in different places. During the investigation of the case, when it was found out that the accused rabbi was planning to go abroad, other information including his passport number was given to the immigration police.
Immigration police arrested him at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday while he was preparing to board a Rabbi Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight to Singapore. Later, when the immigration police informed the Sreepur police, the rabbi was informed by the immigration police on Tuesday afternoon.
