A court has issued arrest warrants against four people, including Bandarban Municipality Mayor Mohammad Islam Baby. Judge Mohammad Saifur Rahman Siddique of the District Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal passed the order on Monday (January 24th).
Plaintiff’s lawyer Kazi Mahotul Islam has confirmed the information.
According to the case sources, on June 18, 2021, Mayor Mohammad Islam Baby, Mahabur Rahman, Nasir Uddin, Ashutosh Dey, Sheikh Farid Uddin, Milon and seven others were charged under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act by a woman named Rehena Akter on charges of violence, vandalism and illegal assembly. The court accepted the allegations and directed the OC (Tourist Police) to investigate. After a long investigation, a report was submitted to the court against Nasir Uddin, Ashutosh Dey, Sheikh Farid Uddin for being involved in the incident.
Plaintiff Rehena Akhter objected to the report. Later, the investigation of the case found the involvement of Mayor Mohammad Islam Baby. As a result, the court today issued arrest warrants against the mayor and four others.
Rehna Begum, the plaintiff in the case, said that before her father’s death, her father had given her share of the property along with her four brothers and sisters. But the mayor showed them power and harassed them with police. That’s why they wanted a fair trial.
Ashutosh Dey, a personal assistant to Bandarban municipality mayor Mohammad Islam Baby, said that a woman named Rehena Akter had filed the case. But they didn’t know anything about the arrest warrant.
