In Rangpur’s Mithapukur Upazila, a fifth-grade student committed suicide by hanging herself after her mother threatened to ban her from playing games on her mobile phone. The tragic incident happened today, Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Sultana Akhter Shilamoni, 10. She is the daughter of farmer Sadeq Ali of Nishchintopur village in Latibpur Union.
Shilamoni was in fifth grade at the local BRAC school.
According to police and local sources, the child was playing mobile games in her bedroom. At noon her mother complained about this. Even then she did not go out.
Later, at around 1 pm, the people of the house entered the house and saw Shilamani hanging with a scarf around her neck. Doctors pronounced her dead after she was taken to Mithapukur Upazila Health Complex.
Mithapukur Police Station OC (Investigation) Zakir Hossain said, “The body was recovered from the health complex and brought to the police station.” It is believed that she committed suicide after being scolded by her mother for playing games on mobile phones. He further added that the victim had been found hanging from her neck. Other inquest reports have been made. Burial has been allowed as there is no complaint from the family.
