A fisherman went missing after Border Guard Police (BGP) of Myanmar opened fire on two fishermen while they were fishing on Naf river in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early today.
The missing fisherman Md Elias (50), son of late Syed Ahmed, hails from Balukhali union, reports our Cox’s Bazar staff correspondent.
Another fisherman, Guru Mia, son of late Motiur Rahman, however managed to flee the scene and return home, said locals.
The incident took place in the early hours of today while local fishermen were fishing in Naf river in Lombabeel area under Huaikeng union.
According to Guru Mia, he along with Elias went fishing in the Naf River in Lambabil area last evening in search of livelihood. At around 11 pm, when the BGP opened fire indiscriminately at them, the duo fled towards two sides.
“To save my life, I hid in the riverbank all night. Somehow, I came back to my village this morning. I suspect that Elias might have been shot,” said Guru Mia.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Zayed Hasan, in-charge of the Huaikeng police outpost, said he had heard from various sources that two fishermen went fishing in the Naf river and one fisherman named Elias remains missing.
Lt Col Sheikh Khalid Mohammad Iftekhar, commander of BGB Battalion-2 said, “We started working on the matter soon after getting to know about it.”
However, Elias was not found till the filing of this report around 9:30pm tonight.
