The search committee has sat in the first phase meeting with eminent citizens for the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. Although 20 people were invited to the meeting, 14 people attended.
The meeting started at 11:20 am on Saturday (February 12) in the Jazz Lounge of the Bangladesh Supreme Court building.
Among those invited to the meeting are: Senior Lawyers AF Hasan Arif, Fida M Kamal, Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Munsurul Haque Chowdhury, Barrister Roknuddin Mahmud, MK Rahman, AJ Mohammad Ali, Dr. Shahdin Malik, former cabinet secretary Ali Imam Majumder, former vice chancellor of Dhaka University A A M S Arefin Siddique, professor of law at Dhaka University Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan, former professor of English at Dhaka University Syed Manjurul Islam, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kamrul Hasan Khan, President of the Bangladesh Medical Association Dr. Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Dhaka University Professor of Law Dr. Asif Nazrul, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (Education) Dr. Maqsood Kamal, Bangladesh Asiatic Society President Professor Mahfuza Khanam, FBCCI President Md. Jasim Uddin, Sharmin Murshid, chief executive of Brati, and Munira Khan, president of the Fair Election Monitoring Alliance (FEMA).
It may be mentioned that the term of the present Election Commission headed by KM Nurul Huda is coming to an end on 14th February. The newly formed search committee will make recommendations to the President to form a new Election Commission through the appointment of a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and four Election Commissioners.
