The low-lying areas of Barguna have been inundated by the effects of cyclone Ashani. Thousands of seasonal fruit watermelons are being wasted in the watermelon fields due to continuous rains. As a result, the farmers are in danger of loss.
It is learned that watermelons in most of the fields in the district have already been sold. However, watermelons of several areas including Khakbunia, Amtali, Chaumuhani of Nimtali Baliatali Union of Sadar Upazila have remained in the field till now.
Watermelon fields in the Khakbunia area of Nimtali and the Baliatali union of Barguna Sadar Upazila are flooded. Knee water has accumulated in the watermelon field due to a lack of a drainage system. Farmers pick watermelons from the fields and pile them on the road. Someone is chopping watermelons that are submerged in water and taking them to the boat. They are worried that the watermelon will not be sold due to drowning in rainwater. The local farmers are fearing the loss of millions of takas.
In this regard, Deputy Director of Barguna Agriculture Extension Department Abu Syed Jobaidul Alam said that relief will be provided to the farmers who have been affected by the cyclone.
