The Business Management Education Centre to Provide Training Allowances to TEVET Students

BMEC announces monthly training allowances for TEVET students during internship period

BMEC Introduces Training Allowances for TEVET Students

Exciting news for Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training (TEVET) students in Malawi as the Business Management Education Centre (BMEC) has made a groundbreaking announcement. The BMEC, in collaboration with the Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) and the Employers’ Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM), has unveiled a plan to provide training allowances to students during their internship period. This move aims to address some of the challenges faced by TEVET students, particularly those undertaking attachments.

Winstone Bergi, the BMEC Country Coordinator, shared during the official announcement that the initiative is designed to support TEVET students struggling with internship opportunities due to firms' reluctance to take them on board as trainees. One of the primary reasons for this reluctance is the inability of these firms to provide monthly allowances to the students during their internship period.

Bergi emphasized that BMEC's goal is to bolster the internship program by covering the interns' training allowances for the entire six-month internship period. The pilot phase has received funding amounting to MK4,500,000.00, demonstrating BMEC's commitment to supporting skills development and human resource enhancement in Malawi.

Encouraging Career Development Through Internships

Bergi underlined the significance of internships as valuable learning experiences that offer practical exposure related to students' fields of study. He encouraged the beneficiaries of this program to maximize this opportunity for career exploration, skill development, and professional growth.

TEVETA Regional Manager for the south region, Conceptor Bamusi, lauded BMEC and ECAM for their timely intervention, noting that it would significantly contribute to improving the welfare of TEVET students. However, Bamusi raised concerns about the lack of adherence by employers in Malawi to the Global Quality Apprenticeship Framework of 2023, which mandates signing agreements with TEVET students undergoing attachments.

In response to these concerns, ECAM Executive Director George Khaki assured stakeholders that efforts were underway to ensure compliance with the framework's requirements. Khaki highlighted ECAM's membership in the Global Quality Apprenticeship Network, emphasizing the importance of adhering to rules such as signing contracts and paying apprenticeship allowances.

To address the issue comprehensively, Khaki suggested that more companies should consider joining ECAM to promote best practices in supporting TEVET students during their training periods.
