4-H Liberia: Empowering Youth Through Agriculture

Exploring the impactful work of 4-H Liberia in empowering youth through agriculture training and education.

National Agriculture Camp

Imagine a vibrant nation where the youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow but also the farmers of today. This vision became a reality through the first Agriculture Youth Camp organized by 4-H Liberia in December 2016. Held in Montserrado County, the camp aimed to change the perception that agriculture is a poor person's job and highlighted the profitability and viability of engaging in agricultural activities.

The camp brought together 68 4-H student leaders from various counties, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among the youth. This event was just the beginning, as 4-H Liberia continued its success with an agriculture fair and youth camp in the summer of 2018, further empowering youth to take charge of their agricultural future.

Training of Agriculture Teachers

Education is the key to sustainable development, and 4-H Liberia recognized this by partnering with USADF and CARI to train 72 agriculture and general science instructors as well as six field officers. The training focused on major vegetable production practices and crop post-harvest operations, equipping educators with the necessary knowledge to pass on to the next generation of agricultural enthusiasts.

The six-day training held in Swakoko, Bong County, in May 2015, was a collaborative effort between public and private schools from six different counties. Despite challenges like the rainy season approaching, all 78 participants were trained effectively, emphasizing the urgency and importance of agricultural education in Liberia.

Mr. G. Umaru Sheriff, the National Executive Director of 4-H Liberia, has been instrumental in connecting the global 4-H network and providing valuable information for articles like this one. The impact of 4-H goes beyond borders, transforming not only youth but also adults into positive, engaged leaders in their communities.
