Decrease in Sales Raises Concern Among Publishers

Publishers and booksellers expressed their disappointment over the decrease in sales compared to previous years. Abosar Prokashan Sangstha stall manager Masud Rana highlighted a significant drop of about 20% in sales, while Ananya publisher Monirul Hoque noted a 25% decline in sales this year. The rise in book prices and the economic challenges faced by the general public were cited as contributing factors to the decrease in sales.

Challenges Faced by Publishers and Booksellers

Bangladesh Publishers and Booksellers Association vice-president Shamal Paul emphasized that the estimated sales figure provided by Bangla Academy does not reflect the true impact on the industry. Publishers have reported a significant decrease in profit margins, highlighting the need for support and sustainable solutions to address the challenges faced by the publishing sector.

Recognition for Outstanding Contributions

The closing ceremony of the book fair was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including the prime minister's adviser on education and culture Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and state minister for cultural affairs Naheed Ezaher Khan. Awards were presented to publishing houses in different categories, recognizing their exceptional publications and innovative stall designs.

In a time where the value of literature and the importance of promoting a reading culture are more critical than ever, the challenges faced by publishers and booksellers underscore the need for collective efforts to support the growth and sustainability of the publishing industry. As we bid farewell to another successful edition of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair, let us reflect on the power of books to inspire, educate, and unite us in our shared love for literature.
