As we navigate the second half of our term in Government, the urgency of addressing climate change becomes increasingly apparent. We must reflect on our achievements and the work that lies ahead on our shared government program. The emergence of new challenges demands swift action from the Government.
- Three years ago, the Scottish Greens were approached to join the Government, with a clear mandate from party members to address unfair rents.
- The commitment to deliver a New Deal for Tenants, grounded in the principle that housing is a human right, has been a top priority.
As a party of Government, we have successfully implemented the emergency rent freeze legislation, protecting tenants from unendurable rent hikes. Despite initial criticisms, the legislation stood strong against legal challenges, showcasing its effectiveness.
Empowering Tenants: The Housing Bill
Last month, we took a significant step towards delivering a New Deal for Tenants with the introduction of the Housing Bill. This legislation will establish permanent rent controls in Scotland, ensuring that rents do not spiral out of control.
- The bill grants tenants rights such as the ability to keep pets, decorate their homes, reclaim unclaimed deposits, and challenge evictions.
- These rights are fundamental to enhancing tenants' daily wellbeing and happiness, transforming rented properties into secure, long-term homes.
Climate Crisis and Urgent Action
The climate and nature emergency is no longer a distant threat but a clear and present danger that requires immediate action. The recent report by the UK's Climate Change Committee indicates that Scotland is likely to miss its 2030 emissions reduction target.
It is evident that Scotland must reset its climate policy and accelerate action across sectors such as transport, agriculture, and industry to achieve meaningful progress. The Scottish Greens are advocating for:
