Edgewood Baseball Team Enjoys Spring Training in Florida

The Edgewood baseball team had a memorable experience during their Spring Break in Florida at the Jackie Robinson Major League Baseball Training Complex.

Soaking Up the Sun and Baseball

Last week, the Edgewood baseball team had a chance to escape the unpredictable early spring weather in Ashtabula by heading down to Florida. The Warriors not only enjoyed the sunshine, sand, and shore of Florida's east coast but also had the unique opportunity to play at a major league facility, the Jackie Robinson Major League Baseball Training Complex.

Coach Derek Stern expressed his excitement about the experience, describing it as "great." The team played on top-notch turf fields, used professional batting cages, and even had the chance to play a high school game on a major league facility. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the players.

A Business Trip with a Touch of Fun

While Stern referred to the trip as a "business trip," it was much more than just baseball. The team spent five days together, enjoying some time at the beach, sharing meals, and bonding as a high school baseball family. According to Stern, the experience was about creating lasting memories and fostering a sense of camaraderie among the players.

From sunrise to sundown, the team did everything together – breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between. It was more than just a baseball trip; it was an opportunity for the players to build relationships that will last a lifetime.

On the Diamond

Despite finishing the trip with a 1-2 record, Stern emphasized that the focus was not solely on wins and losses. The experience provided valuable insights into the team's strengths and weaknesses as they prepared for the upcoming Chagrin Valley Conference games.

Stern highlighted the team's hitting prowess and defensive skills but also acknowledged some concerns about pitching accuracy. While it was early in the season, the trip served as a reality check for the team's pitching performance against tough opponents.

Support and Fundraising

The team's trip to Florida wouldn't have been possible without the support of various community members and organizations. In addition to fundraising efforts, the team received a generous donation from the American Legion and assistance from local businesses like Sunset Transportation.

Stern expressed his gratitude for the support they received and recognized the challenges of transitioning from outdoor play in Florida to indoor practices back home. Despite the difficulties, the team remains focused on staying sharp until they can hit the field again.

Looking Ahead

As Edgewood returns to Ohio, they face the reality of continuing their season indoors until the weather permits outdoor play. While the transition may be challenging, Stern and his team are determined to make the most of their experiences in Florida and carry that momentum into their upcoming games.

With their eyes set on future matchups and the Chagrin Valley Conference schedule, the Warriors are ready to showcase their skills and unity as they navigate through the rest of the season.
