The struggling New Jersey Devils, looking to shake up their coaching staff in hopes of turning their season around, announced on Monday that they had fired head coach Lindy Ruff. Ruff, who had been with the team for three-plus seasons, was let go after a string of disappointing performances.

Travis Green Steps In as Interim Coach

Assistant coach Travis Green, a former head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, will step into the role of interim coach for the Devils. General manager Tom Fitzgerald made the announcement following the team's 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

Green, who has experience coaching at multiple levels, will take over starting at Tuesday's morning skate as the Devils prepare to face off against the Florida Panthers at home. The rest of the coaching staff, including assistants Ryan McGill, Chris Taylor, Sergei Brylin, and goaltending coach Dave Rogalski, will remain in their positions.

A Difficult Decision

Fitzgerald emphasized the need for accountability and competitiveness within the organization, stating, "Unfortunately, we are not currently at that level, and I needed to make this decision." Despite Ruff's contributions to developing the team's young talent, including stars like Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes, the decision to part ways was made in the best interest of the team's future success.

Ruff had been given a multiyear extension before the start of the season, but as the team's performance continued to falter, the calls for his dismissal grew louder. The Devils have struggled defensively and in goal, leading to a disappointing season thus far.

Looking Ahead

With several young stars locked in under long-term contracts, the Devils had high expectations coming into the season after a successful playoff run last year. However, the team has failed to meet those expectations, prompting the coaching change.

Green, who previously coached the Canucks and led them to the second round of the postseason in 2020, brings a wealth of experience to the role of interim coach. His familiarity with the team and commitment to success will be crucial as the Devils look to right the ship and get back on track.

Trade Deadline Looms

As the trade deadline approaches, the Devils will be looking to make some moves to improve their roster and bolster their playoff chances. With Green now at the helm, the team will be looking to make a push in the final stretch of the season and secure a spot in the postseason.

The decision to part ways with Ruff marks the seventh in-season coaching change in the NHL this year, as teams across the league look to make adjustments and position themselves for success. The Devils will be hoping that the change in leadership will spark a turnaround and propel them towards a playoff berth.
